Balloons carrying numerous packages of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was forced to close for an extended period when multiple of them floated into the airspace of Lithuania.
Aviation Problems
The temporary shutdown led to the cancellation of 30 flights disrupting six thousand travelers, with authorities cautioning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Officials confirmed that multiple atmospheric balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with a pair of them ending up precisely above the airport's airspace.
Approximately 14 of the atmospheric instruments sent during the weekend passed through the metropolitan zone, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and near the frontier with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
At least 11 balloons carrying 18,000 packs of illegal tobacco products have been collected so far, though additional discoveries are expected, according to customs agents.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
While creating issues, officials emphasized that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - cigarettes from Belarus - are nothing new in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
To date in the current year, over five hundred weather devices have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been documented the previous year.
Regional Consequences
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Polish territory, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has recorded more than one hundred incidents in which smuggled items were delivered from its adjacent country employing the balloons.
Criminal Methodology
In response to questions about why criminal organizations employ a technique that proves especially affected by weather factors rather than more controllable drones, officials clarified that "Atmospheric equipment are rudimentary tools used by illegal traders - they are cheaper than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Representatives further stated that "The objective of our agencies is to confiscate the maximum possible volumes of smuggled items and to arrest masterminds and perpetrators so that this activity become not financially viable and do not pose risk to commercial air travel."
Regional Security Context
The recent incidents occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have resulted in flight interruptions across the region.
Similar occurrences in neighboring countries have led European authorities to fast-track conversations about improving airspace protection throughout the region.
