The US monetary authority cut borrowing costs on midweek, marking the second rate cut this year during financial volatility stemming from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.
Decision Arrives at Unprecedented Moment for Federal Reserve
The move to cut the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a span of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an extraordinary moment for the Fed. The authority has been under immense pressure to cut rates even with ongoing price increases.
Fed Statement Highlights Labor Market Shifts
In a announcement, the Fed stated that the jobless rate had increased but stays modest. “Job gains have slowed,” the statement notes. “Inflation has risen and stays somewhat elevated.”
Federal Closure Complicates Central Bank’s Task
The continuing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in American history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Gathering of key financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the closure.
Data Gap Impacts Policy Decisions
The Federal Reserve usually studies BLS data to assess employment trends, including the number of employment gains created to the economy and the present unemployment rate. The last jobs report was published in the beginning of last month, prior to the shutdown, and provided a relatively bleak snapshot of the jobs market in the previous month.
The number of positions added to the market in the summer month was lower by more than 100,000 since the spring, and unemployment crept up to 4.3% – the highest since three years ago.
Private Data Indicate Ongoing Slowdown
Though BLS was set to release last month’s employment data in the start of last month, it halted its publication once the closure started. Private payroll firm ADP indicated recently that the private sector eliminated thirty-two thousand jobs in September, a sign that the job market is continuing to slow.
“Supply as well as demand for labor has declined significantly,” Fed chair the Fed chairman said recently, which he had earlier said stems from trade and immigration measures.
Inflation Report Reveals Gradual Rise
Though the bureau’s jobs report has been suspended, the bureau still issued its inflation report for last month that showed that costs are rising, although gradually. Prices increased 3% over the last year, the peak since January. In spring, the yearly price increase was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
