Right-leaning responses to the partial disclosure of files involving the Jeffrey Epstein case have been mixed, with certain supporters of the former Trump administration pointing out the noticeable appearance of former President Clinton and other Democrats in images, while others lamented how heavy censorship portray Donald Trump and GOP members in a unfavorable manner.
Justice Department Defends Redactions with Strong Hyperbole
Administration representatives justified the heavily censored sections with intense exaggerated language. “At no point in U.S. the nation's history has a President or the Department of Justice been so transparent with the public about such a sensitive legal issue,” stated Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who issued a detailed memo describing the censorship process.
Concerns Prompted by Redactions
While Trump's identity and image appear in portions of the documents, the widespread black blocks raise significant concerns about what may be hidden behind them. Some Republicans immediately called for increased transparency.
“The public are furious and disengaging,” posted Georgia Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.
In a online statement, Republican Kentucky Thomas Massie said the redactions break the statute, and implied that a subsequent legislature may move to impeach the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that offense. “Regrettably, today’s file dump grossly does not comply with both the intent and the letter of the act,” he added.
A Faction of Rightwing Commentators Rally In Support of the Disclosure
But, a segment of rightwing commentators and former President allies came out strongly in support of the Justice Department's actions.
The release—from a justice department run by key Trump associate Pam Bondi—contains scores of pages that are completely censored, and numerous of the men shown in pictures have their faces obscured.
But a few are not, featuring prominent individuals like Clinton, pop singer Michael Jackson, and academic Noam Chomsky. The inclusion of the former president, in particular, enabled certain rightwing figures to launch the offensive.
“This is quite rich how the Democrats wrongly accused President Trump of associating with a pedophile, only for the Trump DOJ to unveil documents that show Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a pedophile,” stated right-wing activist Laura Loomer.
“New Epstein Files reveal Bill Clinton shirtless in a hot tub with a woman that is not his spouse Hillary Clinton,” posted lawyer Rogan O’Handley. “There is only one explanation Epstein would photograph a Commander-in-Chief with a girl in a hot tub: Leverage.”
Former President Spokesperson Releases Statement
Clinton has consistently stated he knew of zero criminal actions by Epstein and has never been accused to have participated in any wrongdoing. “The administration hasn’t been hiding those files for months only to dump them at the last minute on a Friday to protect Bill Clinton,” his spokesperson Angel Ureña stated in a statement.
“This is about shielding themselves from what comes next, or from what they’ll try and conceal forever. Therefore they can release as many grainy 20-plus-year-old photos as they desire, but it is not about Bill Clinton. Never has, not ever be,” the statement concluded.
Broader Rightwing Commentary Remains Muted
However, broader comment on the political right was relatively muted following the release, particularly when compared with the loud calls for action that came before the congressional approval to pass a law mandating the documents' release.
The commentator, who recently secured press credentials at the Pentagon, had been among the most vocal advocates for a complete release. Earlier this year, she criticized the Justice Department broadly and Bondi specifically after a set of rightwing influencers were given hard-copy folders of materials that contained no previously unseen information.
