As any prominent prize-giving event nears, there’s always an outcry for the addition fresh award types to acknowledge underappreciated efforts and delight the spirits of followers with niche passions.
A fellow writer made the case advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. The same goes for tabletop games, this being a dedicated supporter's campaign. Yet I need to apologize in advance when I prioritize just as with other dedicated enthusiasts, there's a strong justification for why my demand is the most urgent and important of all. This is the request: It's essential to create a category for puzzle games.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Classifying creative works is not a science; opinions vary greatly, and inevitably generate discussions concluding with vague boundaries. This explains why cinema institutions steer clear of genre categories. However, it represents an essential concession in the world of interactive entertainment, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them one unified medium.
To recognize the complete range of achievement in video games to be recognized, while allowing diverse titles to compete fairly, specific award classifications remain vital.
Present Award Structure
Prominent interactive entertainment events presently include classifications covering Action, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these six categories effectively encompass many game types, allowing placement for most games within them.
This doesn't apply to logic-based experiences. No appropriate category exists to accommodate them. Think about these recent excellent titles, showing diverse approaches: structural challenges of one title, the pulse-pounding block-matching of another game, thought-provoking social scenarios from additional release. What category would fit them within current classifications? Nowhere, that’s where.
Recognition Challenges
Many instances occur outstanding logic titles published annually lacking appropriate categories in entertainment awards, unless they happen to qualify for categories like Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging independent game categories.
- A renowned logic title wasn’t nominated for anything in 2014
- Another imaginative release was excluded during that ceremony
- Popular arranging title was overlooked recently
- Limited numbers of puzzle games scraped into small studio or handheld classifications
Significance of Puzzle Games
These are often small games, but the art of the puzzle game carries substantial weight. Iconic mobile puzzle games rank among most popular titles globally continuing this trend for over a decade.
The iconic tile-matching title challenges famous sandbox experiences competing to become most purchased experience; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Logic titles represent cornerstones for gaming as medium, while interacting across multiple categories.
The Solution and Justification
Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter that issue. It would be easy to populate a field of five interesting, varied, worthy titles annually without trouble — perhaps, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave numerous deserving experiences.
And to reiterate, these include experiences that otherwise have no home during prominent ceremonies. Logic title developers are working at the demanding boundary interactive creation, creating some of most fundamental forms within interactive entertainment. Comparable to movie stunt professionals, they merit acknowledgment. Let’s not keep them waiting generations.
